One of the most iconic Premier League moments cost David Bentley his Spurs career

David Bentley has claimed that soaking Harry Redknapp with a bucket of water effectively ended his Tottenham career.

Spurs had just beaten Man City to qualify for the Champions League for the first time in 2010 – and the celebrations reached fever pitch.

With Bentley acting as ringleader, several Spurs players decided to chuck a bucket of water over Manager Harry Redknapp during his post-match interview.

And in an interview with The Telegraph, Bentley has revealed that his prank cost him his future with the North London club.

“The lads tried to get the chairman in the changing room and someone said ‘get the manager’ and it turned out he was being interviewed, so I went and did it,” he said.

“It was just a celebration, I wasn’t trying to make him look silly.

“He wasn’t happy because he was trying to change his image and I went and chucked water on him. He wanted to be like Sir Alex Ferguson.

“I played loads that year and there was no problem between us, but then that was the end for me.”

The original ice bucket challenge

Redknapp said in 2011 that he thought Bentley’s actions were “disrespectful”, but insisted that he held no grudge against the player.

The former Arsenal man failed to find his way back into Redknapp’s plans and made just two more Premier League appearances for Spurs.

Bentley retired from football in 2014 after attempting to reignite his career with a series of loans spells, including a year with FC Rostov in Russia.

The winger, capped seven times for England, can now be found in Spain owning a chain of restaurants.

Rumour has it that one of his restaurants is set to feature on Gordon Ramsay’s ‘Costa Del Nightmares.’
