Liverpool old boys get sweet revenge on Real Madrid for Champions League final

Five months on from the Champions League final in Kiev and the wounds will still be sore for Liverpool fans.

There is a sense of what might have been; what if Mo Salah hadn’t hurt his shoulder? What if Loris Karius opted to behave like a normal professional goalkeeper?

Considering Zinedine Zidane’s departure and Real Madrid’s disastrous start to this season, many have felt in hindsight there was no better time to play Los Blancos.

But a couple of Liverpool old boys were on hand today to gain some modicum of revenge and pile on the misery at the Bernabeu.

Philippe Coutinho got things going at the Nou Camp, but the story was really all about Luis Suarez from there on in.

Coutinho opened the scoring inside the first 15 minutes, capping a fine move that saw Jordi Alba rampage down the left in true Alba style.

After that Suarez took charge of the game.

The Anfield icon first converted a penalty after VAR ruled Rafa Varane had pushed him to the ground.

Then, after weathering an early second half storm that saw Marcelo pull one back, Suarez displayed his outrageous resume of finishing.

First he produced a sublime header, generating all the power himself to score from nearly the edge of the area.

Then he pounced on a Sergio Ramos mistake (another aspect that will please Liverpool fans) to coolly chip Thibaut Courtois to complete a delicious hat-trick.

Arturo Vidal made it five in the dying minutes… and the writing really is on the wall for Julen Lopetegui.

Imagine what would have happened if Lionel Messi was fit too?
